People fail their first heroic at 80 not because they lack damage, but because of two things: someone walked in wearing unenchanted quest greens, and after the second wipe the group stopped talking. The first is fixed in half an hour at the auction house, the second with three lines in chat.

The entry bar: what has to be on you

Unlike Outland, Northrend heroics have no attunement keys: all you need is level 80, and that is the trap. Blues out of the level 80 normal dungeons, roughly item level 187-200, are the minimum at which a run stops being a slog. A pure quest set is doable, but only if the other four know the dungeon.

RoleThe bar you should not go belowHow to make up the difference
Tank535 defense skill: that removes crits from heroic bosses. On a death knight talents cover the requirement. Health of 25-27 thousand unbuffedStamina gems, defense enchants, blacksmithing sockets
HealerA full set of enchants and gems matters more than raw spell power. Aim for 1600 spell power and enough mana for a pull without drinkingSpirit, an efficient rotation instead of your biggest heals, mana potions
Physical DPSAround 6 percent hit, roughly 200 hit rating. The 8 percent raid cap only becomes necessary in raidsHit gems and enchants first, strength and agility only after that
CasterThe same 6 percent, which on the caster scale is about 160 ratingHit talents first, close the remainder with rating

And separately, the things people forget most often:

  • A gem in every socket. An empty socket in a heroic is a voluntary stat penalty.
  • Enchants in every available slot: cloak, boots, bracers, chest, gloves, leg armor from a leatherworker.
  • An Eternal Belt Buckle — an extra socket for pocket change.
  • Save weapon enchants for last: they are the most expensive and they get replaced along with the weapon faster than anything else.

Consumables that pay for themselves in the very first run

  • A flask, or a pair of elixirs, battle and guardian. Two elixirs are cheaper than a flask and no worse at this stage.
  • Food with a buff. A feast for the whole group is the kind of courtesy people remember.
  • Twenty healing potions and the same number of mana potions in your bags. A Healthstone if there is a warlock in the group.
  • A Runescroll of Fortitude from a scribe and drums from a leatherworker, if your own buffs do not cover everything.
  • Full repairs before you go in and enough gold for repairs afterwards.
  • Your interrupt somewhere visible on the bars. Not in the third row, not behind a modifier key.

Part two: the group falls apart

A wipe is harmless. What is dangerous is the moment after the second one when everybody goes quiet, and then one person types "what a group" and leaves: from there the whole thing dissolves inside a minute.

Who talks

Not whoever has the most damage. By default the tank talks — the tank sets the pace and decides what gets pulled. If the tank stays silent, the healer takes over: the healer is the only one who sees who died first and to what. A voice room in Valor Chat removes half of the problem: "stop, do not pull" takes a second to say instead of twenty to type.

What exactly to say

A three-part formula works: what happened, what we are changing, who does what. No names attached to blame.

We are dying to the explosion on the third second. Spread out five yards. Interrupts on the mage to the right: I go first, hunter second.

Then set your marks. Skull dies first, cross second, moon goes to crowd control. Say it once and do not discuss it again.

How to reassign roles

"Somebody dispel magic" does not work. What works is naming people: who dispels curses, who interrupts the primary target, who covers the second one. If a DPS has a ready tank spec with gear, swapping tanks on trash is acceptable — but as an announced decision, not silently in the middle of a pull. And settle right away who pulls: two people taking initiative is worse than none.

When leaving is the honest choice

  1. Three wipes in a row and the plan has not changed once. A fourth attempt with the same actions will give the same result.
  2. The tank is clearly not at the defense requirement and denies it. Your healing does not solve that.
  3. The insults have started. This one needs no explanation — leave.

On your way out, type one line: "leaving, find a replacement". That is more respectful than vanishing without a word. And remember the roughly half-hour dungeon finder lockout if you drop a random group. What you should not do is leave right before the last boss or after a wipe on trash — trash is almost always fixed by changing the pull order.

Why keep running heroics longer than the gear requires

Even once you no longer need heroic gear, there is still a reason to go: heroic bosses drop Mythic+ keystones. An evening in dungeons is not only about emblems, it is your way into the Mythic+ keystone system with affixes and a timer, where loot goes up to item level 284. A group that has learned not to fall apart after the second wipe survives noticeably longer in keys.

The rest of the mechanics breakdowns are collected in the guides section.
